In the novel Lord of the Flies how long were the boys on the island?

No time period is ever mentioned in the book. As there are no seasons in the tropics it is difficult to judge the passage of time. However the boys' hair had grown uncomfortably long, their clothes have fallen apart and the littluns have developed the distended stomach associated with malnutrition so some time has certainly elapsed. Nevertheless the naval officer still viewed them all as 'liitle boys,' so years certainly haven't passed. It is likely that the boys were on the island for several months but probably less than a year.

∙ 13y agoThe boys were on a plane which was being flown from England, because there was a war going on, against 'the reds.' This was similar to the process of evacuation which took place during World War II, when children were moved out of cities, that might get bombed, to places of safety in the countryside and even in other countries such as Canada and Australia. While the boys were on board the plane the pilot ejected the 'passenger tube' containing the boys. Piggy told Ralph that the pilot was attacked (by enemy planes) and that he saw the rest of the plane with flames coming out of it, Ralph also said that "He (the pilot) couldn't land there, not in a plane with wheels." So, the passenger tube was ejected and crashed into the jungle on the island. Where a violent storm was taking place and the passenger tube, 'with some boys still on board' was drug out to sea, leaving the 'scar' in the jungle.
