We do not know. As no-one at Larkhill will have cared, and as V cannot remember his name or anything that happened to him prior to coming to Larkhill, his identity is lost, and so, therefore is the reason for his imprisonment.

In V For Vendetta, V says to Evey: "I fell in love with you, Evey". So therefore V was probably not gay. However, in Larkhill Detention Centre, there was not just gay men there, so maybe there was something else.
