The questions asked by the naval officer were rhetorical because he asked them as a joke and didn't actually expect an answer in the affirmative. The irony is that an officer of a naval ship involved, or recently involved, in a nuclear war against 'The Reds' was phrasing the question as, 'Nobody killed, I hope?'
