The ring gave Gollum longer life. It transformed him physically. Gollum had been a hobbit but he became a creature who ate fish and lived in caves and dark places. It also transformed him mentally so that he could not live without the ring.

∙ 13y agoFor one, he provides sure entertainment. Also, he makes it more difficult for Bilbo to just walk away with the Ring. And it is because of Gollum that Bilbo realizes it is a magic Ring he has stumbled across.

∙ 12y agoIt makes him invisible. In addition to allowing him to avoid detection, he was able to use it to rescue the dwarves on at least two occasions. The ring also gave him long live, allowing him to live longer than any other hobbit.
