In Harry Potter what is the difference between a prefect and head boy or girl?

Prefects are leaders in their houses. They take on additional responsibilities to help the younger students and to help enforce the rules set by the school. The school faculty selects the students from the 5th years and those students continue into the 6th and 7th years.

The head boy/girl is the top in the prefect ranking. You must be a prefect first then work your way up to head boy/girl. There is one head boy/girl every year. ONLY ONE! You get crowned head boy/girl during a ceremony, which is what Ron Weasley sees in the Mirror of Erised.
