The group wanted to become more popular. The following they got in England, became enormous, and when "Love Me Do" became a #1 seller in Britain, they knew the U.S. would like their music as well.

They had been copying, and listening, and performing songs from the U.S. for a long while, still composing and performing songs of their own. They had talent, and it became obvious as the touring and performing in England, and Germany kept people coming back for more.

Their manager, Brian Epstein, and The Beatles' producer Sir George Martin kept on the record companies in America, until they finally agreed to record them in the States; and we loved them, YA, YA, YAAAAAAAAA!

Had a press conference, then went shopping for records. John Lennon said later "Our first trip was just to buy LPs." (Not entirely true, but they were huge fans of American music.) The Beatles arrived in New York on the 7th of February, 1964, appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show on the 9th, and played their first US concert on the 11th at the Washington Coliseum. The Beatles commenced their second visit to the US on the 19th of August, 1964, when they met Bob Dylan and smoked dope for the first time.

To promote their record sales. The band boldly declared that they wouldn't make an official visit to the United States until they had a Number One hit single there; this happened early in 1964, after the release of "I Want To Hold Your Hand".

Earlier British performers had visited, and found themselves placed low on playbills, or their movies second-billed to American ones. George Harrison had visited his sister (who married an American) in St. Louis late in 1963, and could find no trace of the Beatles in the media or music stores there, even though they had taken England and Europe by storm. The Beatles didn't want to be seen as second-best.
