He was at the Viper Room on Sunset Strip, a Hollywood night club.

And at some point in the evening, Phoenix went to the bathroom to take drugs with various friends and dealers. It was reported that an acquaintance offered him some Persian Brown (a powerful form of heroin, which is snorted) and soon after consuming the drug he became ill. During the early morning hours of October 31, 1993, Phoenix collapsed outside the club from a drug overdose of heroin and cocaine (known as a speedball) and began convulsing for five minutes. Joaquin, his brother, dialed 9-1-1 and during the call Joaquin was unable to determine whether River was breathing. Rain, his sister, proceeded to give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. He was pronounced dead at 1:51 a.m. on the morning of October 31, 1993. He was 23 years old.
