There are two different parts within the series that have been written so far, with the last book in the Vampire Diaries: The Return series entitled Midnight, due to be released on March 15th 2011. The first consists of 4 books; The Awakening, The Struggle, The Fury and Dark Reunion. It was originally meant to be a trilogy but due to pressure from readers L.J.Smith wrote a fourth book. Following further demand she decided to write a spin-off trilogy based around one of the main characters from the original series; Damon Salvatore. The three books in this series are; The Return: Night Fall, The Return: Shadow Souls and The Return: Midnight. L.J.Smith has started writing another spin-off series centering around Elena Gilbert and her friends. The series will consist of three books; The Hunters: Phantom, The Hunters: Moonsong and The Hunters: Eternity. She has also stated that after The Hunters trilogy she will write another trilogy although no details have been released regarding the plot yet. This will bring the total number of Vampire Diaries books to 13.
