Contrary to popular opinion on some websites no one died during the making of the 1959 version of the film starring Charlton Heston. Heston himself during an interview on TCM expressed his disbelief of stuntman Yakima Canutt's ability to defy death during the chariot scenes. However the making of the 1926 Ben Hur spurred rumors that an actor wearing armor drowned from it's weight when he jumped ship during a sea battle scene to avoid an out of control fire. It's doubtful there will be any confirmation to this rumor some 85+ years later.
