The majority of the cast dies except for Johanna, Anthony, and Toby, who are all threatened with death at least once at some point in the play. Most everyone is killed by Sweeney except for Sweeney himself who is killed by his own razor by Toby after Sweeney throws Mrs. Lovett in the bake oven.

Sweeney Todd's true identity is Benjamin Barker, a young barber with a beautiful wife and infant daughter, who is sent to botany Bay on the false charge of 'foolishness' by Judge Turpin, who falls in love with Barker's young wife Lucy. After fifteen years in exile, Barker, know under the name of Sweeney Todd, is rescued at sea by a young sailor named Anthony Hope who takes him back to London with him. Todd seeks revenge on Judge Turpin and vows to 'get him back even as he gloats, in the mean time, [he'll] practice on less honorable throats'. So basically, others are used as practice until the judge comes for a shave.
