There were two different types of rangers. There were the Rangers of the North, which Aragorn was the chieftan. Then there was the Rangers of Ithilien which was commanded by Captain Faramir. Both were extremely skilled in stealth and woodcraft, and faced horrendous odds. Their skill and maneuvrability countered these odds, enabling them to defend positions with only a small amount of men. However, the Rangers of the North were the sundered remnants of Arnor, and that kingdom had dwindled and its people few. Halbarad, when he met up with Aragorn, had thiry rangers. He said it was all that could be gathered in haste. Judging by this, we can only speculate as to the true strength of the Rangers of the North. However, using clues, it may be deciphered. First of all, we know there are at least 32. And we know that the evil beings that the rangers fought were able to come forth and terrorize the folk of Eriador. So we also know that the absence of thirty is enough to leave a gap in the defences. With this, the guess would be about 40 to 50 Rangers of the North in total.
