First off, they are very loud. Seen them thirteen times (a lot of people have seen them far more times than me) but I think I have a good idea how loud they are.
The thing is with Motorhead is that it is not just the volume, it's the overall sound of the band. They don't really have a bass sound, all middle, very distorted. With the volume and that distorted sound they made my ears ring far more than any other band I've ever seen. (Head on pillow in hotel and that tinitus sound that won't go away.) Metallica were loud but not in the same way. The closest in volume to Motorhead oddly enough was Hawkwind years ago(Late 1980's ) at Hammy Odeon. The sound thumped through me, really thumping, but again they didn't have that distorted sound (The violin hurt my ears).
Summery: Motorhead are very loud but the distorted sound adds to the ear damage.
