Francis Coppola is known for taking miles of film and having to edit them very quickly in order to make the film in time. The Godfather Trilogy probably took near 15 - 20 years because the first film was released 1972, the second in 1974 and the third in 1990. So all together its probably close to 20 years.

From the link, below, you can read about the saga of making the first of the Godfather films.

The film was released during the 1972 Oscar year, and Mario Puzo wrote the novel with a publication year of 1969.

In the UK The Telegraph article By Philip Horne, published 22 Sep 2009, you can read:

"He [Coppola] demanded an 80 day shooting schedule; Paramount gave him only 53."

The shooting schedule is only the beginning of filmmaking: what follows can take many, many months.

I think it took 11 or 18 years but not absolutely sure on this. I read the back of the DVD cover and it said it took over a decade to film. Weird - why to the actors look the same?
