How is Katniss independent in the Hunger Games?

She needs Prim to give her a sense of direction, and a purpose to keep on trying to live while in The Hunger Games. Not only does she need people, but she cherishes them as well. In the arena she cherishes Rue's presence when they team up, and when injured and sick in the cave Katniss unknowingly reveals to us how much she cherishes her mother's touch. Katniss is independent by her actions to support and protect her family, but its those people who give Katnissher purpose.
