Edward Bloom spends his life trying to catch an uncatchable fish. When he tells the story of catching the fish, and how it nearly devours his wedding ring, he likens it to his attempts to woo his wife, saying "the only way to catch an uncatchable fish is to offer her a wedding ring". But the fish really is more of a metaphor for Edward's character, and how though the truth of his life may never be caught or pinned down, he was without a doubt a character too big for his own story, and will therefore live on in the stories and heart of his son.
