They use a system which was created by Jim Hensen (of Muppet fame) where the mouth can be operated by remote control from off camera OR it can use a system created by Gerry Anderson creator of Thunderbirds where the sound is amplified to create a powerful signal which then opens and closes a solenoid (magnet effect) in the head of the puppet. Most animtronics use either or both these systems depending on the construction of the moving part concerned
