He wears very large shoes which give him some height.
In interviews when asked this question he has also said that it is due to shooting angles. For instance, looking up at his face or torso from below can give extra height, as can various other angles to give the impression of his giant features.
As far as we are aware, special effects were not used to make him bigger.
