At one point during the building of the first fire on the mountain, I quote... "Ralph found himself alone on a limb with Jack and they grinned at each other, sharing this burden." "Almost too heavy." Jack grinned back. "Not for the two of us." They stepped back after adding the limb to the pile, "laughing with triumphant pleasure, so that immediately Ralph had to stand on his head. The author paints a picture of two boys working together to achieve a common purpose, unfortunately as the novel progresses the two boys find themselves increasingly cast in opposition to each other.
