They're two completely different characters. Nicholson's Joker was sort of a gentlemanly killer. He maintained a sort of civilized, professional exterior.
However, Ledger's Joker is an anarchic loon who kills for enjoyment and has no sense of reason. He also sees no reason to hide behind a professional exterior; he's not ashamed to admit he is the way he is. However, he is adamant that he is notcrazy.
Personally, Nicholson's Joker is very amusing for his brand of humor, whereas I feel that Ledger's Joker is more true to the character and I like him better overall. Personaly the nicholson joker looked R-E-T-A-R-D-E-D!!! no comparison the heath legdger joker was WAY better!!! new person. i agree.

Did you mean 2010? If so it was Heath Ledger
Yeah, if Heath Ledger didn't play Joker. Heath still did a really good job though
In 2008, The Dark Knight was released featuring the late Heath Ledger as the Joker.
Voted for: Heath Ledger When it comes to originality, Mark Hamill I'd also pick for performance in the majority in animations, but with Heath is the way he portrays is another instance, more humanly threatening in crime waves. He's much more dangerous even when he's sadly done so only once, the way he takes hits and how it pans out for his plans to make ends meet as the criminal mastermind who kills a lot. His Joker builds up a powerful threat that would do anything and manipulate others, even when looking like a smiling psychopath of sinister laughs.
Heath Ledger plays the Joker in The Dark Knight. He died in January 2008, prior to the release of the film at age 28 due to an accidental drug overdose/mix. Since then, he earned several posthumous nominations and awards for his role as the Joker.Read more about him at http://heathledger.com/.
