I have one I was given as a child 30 years ago by my grandfather and I was taught to use it for carving wood and designing or art on leather. I still have the thing haven't touched for at least 20 years plugged it in still works. Being such an old tool there are much more advanced machines today but I keep mine because of the connection I have with my grandfather and my past. The advantage to the tool was ease of use compared to hammer and chisel or pushing and shoving sharp tools. It was fun for light hobby carving.
