You have to have a known source to compare it to, like a metronome. Turn on the metronome, and then turn the dial on the metronome until the beats line up with the song. Or, if you have a song with a second hand, you can guess. If it's one beat per second, then it's 60 bpm. if it's two beats per second, then it's 120 bpm.
