The name of a dead person is usually provided by identification papers on his person, at his home, or from his doctors. This can be corroborated by a family member or associate, and verified by identifying marks or scars, fingerprints, dental records, or DNA matching.

Many corpses recovered from disasters are never positively identified. And although the percentage of errors is small, there are still many thousands of corpses that are identified incorrectly each year, either through mistakes or negligence or deliberate fraud.
