∙ 12y agothey ride in carriges that they think are pulling themselves, but are really being pulled by these strange horse-type creatures that can only be seen by people who have witnesed someone die. In the Order of the Phoenix, harry, Hermione and Neville meet Luna lovegood when harry asks "what are they? pulling the carriges?" Hermione answers, "nothings pulling the carrige harry, it's pulling itself like always." they didnt notice Luna until she spoke and said, "youre not going mad, i can see them too. youre just as sane as i am." she later reveals to harry whenhe finds her feeding the creatures that they can only be seen by people who have seen death, and that her mom died doing an experiment. This information i got from the movie, i have not read the book, but I'm sure its very similar.
