Katniss has 2 allies( Rue and Peeta, until Rue dies) who help her through out the book. She tries to stay away from any other tributes in the arena. In the first few days in the arena, she finds a pond which also benefits her.
Katniss outsmarts the Gamemakers by deciding that she and Peeta both want to live, so they each grab a handful of nightlock, which are very deadly berries, and show that they will both eat them and die, leaving The Hunger Games with no victor. Before they could, the capitol declares them both victors. I know this because I have seen the movie and read the book at least 3 times. I hope my info was useful to you! =D
She knows what not to eat and drink. She also knows how to catch and prepare her own food. Her hunter instincts teach her to always be aware. She refused to play by tha capitols rules
She uses the poison berries (nightlock) so Peeta or Katniss do not have to die.
I think the only anwser is "Why not." If you are wondering what her talent is than it is shooting a bow and arrow.
She uses the berries to make them decide on an ultimatum - either Katniss and Peeta simultaneously commit suicide, and there is no victor, or the Gamemakers announce them both as Victors.
