She was in a mental hospital accidentally. She had a twin sister named Courtney and Courtney was supposed to be in the hospital because she had problems because she always acted like Ali. One day she was home between hospitals and Courtney switched with Ali and Ali couldn't get her mom to believe that she was the real Ali.

∙ 12y agoThe four girls assume Alison is dead for the first couple books then discover that Alison had a secret twin named Coutrney ( who was not mentally stable) Courtney then switched places with Alison, forcing her to go and stay at the mental hospital (for 4 years) Alison then in her own madness trapped in the facility masterminds her own twins death, and her murderous rampage. After confronting Aria, Spencer, Hanna, and Emily convincing them of her inocince she invites them to the old family log house where they used to visit in grade 7. She then attemts to muder the girls for ruining her life by trapping them and setting the house on fire. They later escape, as the house burns to ashes leaving no evidence of Ali's escape. ( You later on learn that Emily left the door ajar so that if Ali had the chance she could of escaped) A year later they begin to recieve more "A" messages. After there mudereus vaction to Jamacia Aria murdered an inocent girl named Tbitha thought to be Ali.Later learing that Tabitha and Ali had both went to the mental instututioin and had be freinds. The girls assume that Ali is alive, seeing blond flashes of hair and giggles, not to mention the text messages that only Ali would know. So in my opionion I think Ali is still alive and determined but the only way to find out is to read the final books of the seris.
