How did the boys happen to come to the island?

The boys where on board an airplane and they were being evacuated away from England which was apparently engaged in some imagined future nuclear war against 'The Reds.' The plane was headed to an unnamed destination. During a storm the plane was attacked and the "passenger tube" was ejected. The "passenger tube" crash landed on the island, leaving the "scar" in the jungle. Large waves, caused by the storm, dragged the "passenger tube" out to sea, along with some boys (and presumably some adults) who were still on board.

All the boys are on the same plane that crashes on the island. Ralph and Piggy find each other and use a conch shell to call all the other boys on the island.
