Lynyrd Skynrd comes from the name Leonard Skinner, a PE teacher at Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville in the late 1960s when he sent a group of students to the principal's office because their hair was too long. They were later suspended and told to get their hair cut. These very students formed the band Lynyrd Skynrd.
According to what i read/heard, Lynyrd Skynyrd formed sometime in the mid-to-late 1960,s while the band members were still attending high school. Apparently, the band,s name is based on a phys ed instructor named Leonard Skinner, who was apparently disliked/hated at the high school attended by the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
That is true. But in later years there was no anomosity between the teacher and the band....in fact, Leonard Skinner went on into realty and probably enjoyed more business just from the noteriety. These guys were just good ole boys, sometimes rednecks, but good downhome people. Their drug use was overstated to sell albums. They did drink quite a bit (some of them), as their jump to stardom from a bar band overwhelmed them. If you really want to learn about who they were....research how the songs came about, as most are true things that happened in their lives. In particular, "Gimme 3 Steps" and "That Smell" (which was about one of them binge drinking). I really miss Ronnie Van Zant....buried in Middleburg Fl where they have a park in his name. But, Johnny has carried on the band's name with dignity and talent. I wish all of them the best. Read the backgrounds on all the present band members also....if you're a southern rock fan you'll find it really interesting.
