How did nick fury lose his eye?

The creator of Danger Mouse , Brian Cosgrove , in an interview would never say how DM lost his eye and he hinted that DM may just be wearing the patch because he may be hiding a secret weapon of some sort .

Excerpt from the interview : "Well the thing is, has he really lost his eye? If he lifts that patch up, is there something else underneath? Well you never know.
