One of the founding members wanted the band to have a 'romantic' feel, and a train embodies that. At first, the band as a whole hated the name Train, but it eventually stuck.

Way back before any of the fame and San Francisco era, They used to practice in a warehouse near train tracks in Erie PA (Pat is from Erie originally). and when they recorded a demo tape the trains noises were accidentally caught in the background. They didn't have a lot of money for fancy recording equipment.

The record company guy listened to the demo and heard the train noises in the background. and told his assistant bring that train band back in here.

And they got a deal and stuck with the name train.

The early songs they did were reworked and they became famous.

Train originally wanted to call the band "tranquil" but that band name was already taken by singer/ song writer Joseph Accardi. So instead train dropped a few letters and re arranged the pre existing letters to come up with train

It started with Pat and Rob Hotchkiss in San Francisco, California in a coffee shop. Where they released their first album with their own money. :)
