How did Tommy Flanagan from Sons of Anarchy get the scars on his face?

It's what is commonly called a Glasgow smile, from Scotland, he was mugged in a dark alley in Scotland where the perps had sliced his face near the corner of his mouth to his ears, it is done in some gang related incidents where they will kick or stab the victim and as they scream it tears the cuts even more. Either way, he doesn't do anything to hide them and i think its a badge of a Survivor, personally I'm a huge fan of his work and wish him the best.
