Nothing makes him a hero. He wasn't a hero. Heroes don't throw their lives away with drugs. Sid Vicious accomplished virtually nothing in his short lifetime. He rode Johnny Rotten's coattails to fame, then crashed and burned. Lots of other punk rockers were drug addicts too. But the difference is, they also wrote good songs and played good rock 'n' roll.
He couldn't even play his instrument! The same can be said of many punk rockers. The difference is, they eventually learned. Sid never did. He never became a proper musician, never even really tried. He was a terrible bass player.
He contributed nothing to the Sex Pistols except shock value. Johnny Rotten was the brains behind the operation, and the rest of the band could at least play their instruments. Sid couldn't do anything but cut himself up onstage and be obnoxious and self-destructive.
He was a tragic figure, and an archetype of the punk movement. But not a hero.

Gary Oldman, who plays Sid in "Sid and Nancy" was given Sid's real necklace by Sid's mom. He wears it in the film too.
