Firstly, Xavier Mertz died because Belgrave Ninnis took all their food supplies so Mertz couldn't have anything to eat. Later on, he had to only rely on their dog and because dog's liver is concentrated on vitamin A is poisonous to men. Mertz died and secondly, Ninnis died because he fell into a large crevasse (large crack in ice).

How many people were on Douglas mawsons expidition?

I'm not sure if my book is right but this is what it says. Belgrave Ninnis and Dr Xavier Mertz were on Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition in 1911-14. Belgrave Ninnis fell down a crevasse with the food supply sled, the main tent and some dogs(ouch!). A few months later, Dr Xavier Mertz died of sickness and frostbite(sad). Mawson barely survived the 160 km return trip alone.
