He was involved in a very "promiscuous" scene, from what I have read. He had some homosexual lovers, one of which was known to be HIV positive. According to a biography I have read and I have to assume that there was the possibility of drug use intermingled into the scene as well. Many people involved in that scene were dying from AIDS, which is eventually what killed the movement. (As many of the most influential people passed on) But the best answer I can give you is that he probably acquired it from unprotected sexual contact or other such dangerous activities including needle-sharing.
