Well, it all started with slavery. The African slaves sang spirituals and secular music, which combined their native African music with American music. Shortly after all the slaves were emancipated and slavery was outlawed, the ex-slaves created the blues. The blues, dixieland music, and marching band music all kind of "hybridized," and jazz came about in the 1890s in New Orleans.
