Joseph Elliott, a lead vocalist in Def Leppard, made a poster of with a jungle cat with a hearing horn in it's ear. He called it the Deaf Leppard. The band liked it so they shortened it to Def Leppard and used it as the bands name.

Joe Elliot simply proposed the name "Deaf Leopard", which was originally a band name he thought up while writing reviews for imaginary rock bands in his English class. At Tony Kenning's suggestion, the spelling was slightly modified in order to make the name seem less like that of a punk band and perhaps also as an indirect homage to Led Zeppelin.

You'd have to ask Joe Elliott! They were originally called Atomic Mass until Elliott joined, and he had been doodling a logo for a band called 'Def Leppard' in his schoolbooks for years. ok

billy hewitt here,, in the 1970's a group was formed in sheffield england. they were joined by a lead singer named joe elliot, who had thought of the name deaf leapord for the name of a band in high school, after joining the gruop the used the name atomis namm, the changed it to def leppord, after the way led zeppelin used their name.
