Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman to graduate from an American medical college. She was also inspirational in woman's liberation across the country, not just in the medical field. Link attached below.

Elizabeth Blackwell was born in Bristol, UK, but her father moved the family to Cincinnati to open a sugar refinery.

She worked as a teacher to fund a place a medical school, and was accepted to Geneva Medical College in upstate New York only because her application was put to a student vote and many of them thought it was a hoax. She was the first woman to graduate with a medical degree in the US, and went on to practice in France, where she lost an eye as a result of treating a baby with an eye infection. She later went back to the UK and became the first woman registered as a doctor there, as well.

Blackwell, along with her sister and another woman doctor, opened an infirmary, and trained many women to become nurses and doctors. In the UK she opened the Woman's Medical College with Florence Nightingale.
