The poem starts out giving almost human qualities so you would think its about a
lost love or two people that just drifted apart. but then the further in the poem she is describing an elm tree that is being cut down. It is hard to tell "who" this poem is about but "what" its about is how feelings toward something or someone has changed possibly because of an outside source.
