No. The so-called "major" studios (Disney, Fox, Paramount, Sony (Columbia), Universal, Warner Bros.) have seats on the MPAA board and determine policy for that trade association and, in consultation with the National Association of Theatre Owners, its rating system.

The major studios are divisions of much larger media companies. Fox is owned by News Corp., Paramount by Viacom, Universal is about to be acquired by Comcast (the "Cabletown" of 30 Rockjokes), and Warners belongs to Time Warner.

The indies with $50 million+ grosses last year -- Lionsgate, Summit, Overture (Liberty Media), and Weinstein -- add up to about the market clout of one "minor major."
