You do sing from your throat but it is mostly down to your diaphragm that is why you should stand up straight when singing to project your voice and sing out. if you slouch your unable to achieve what you could standing up.
I can not vouch that he sang it in a musical but I clearly recall him singing it on the televised UK 'Sunday Night at the London Palladium' in the mid to late fifties. I remember it being a reproduction of a scene from a current musical which suggests that Stubby Kaye did sing it in a musical, very probably performing in London
