Luckily, the emerald fell out of his stone hand and into the shrine. This sent a wave of power flying across the room, which enabled Cactus McCoy to break out of the stone. Apparently, he was still alive but could not move. This would have kept him from drinking and eating, and possibly breathing, so he would have starved/asphyxiated.
