No. Like most singers of his era, he relied on songwriters to supply him material. He was extremely significant in popularizing early rock 'n' roll -- in fact, he was the first rock 'n' roll idol. He later turned his primary focus to pop standards and spiritual albums, but continued to chart r'n'r singles until 1964. All in all he placed 50 singles on charts btw 1955 and 1964, and was the second most successful singer (after Elvis Presley) of the early r'n'r era.
