To the best of my knowledge no Oscar ( academy award) has ever been awarded to an Animal. Lassie was a Collie. several dogs, were of necessity, involved for different types of stunts- Lassie fighting a more dangerous animal was of course done with trick Photography as were forest fire scenes, etc. the ASPCA would not permit the Dog to be in real life-threartening peril. preoccupation with downbeat subjects turned many adult viewers off. Lassie ( TV version- Provost-Lockhart) had overtones of situation tragedy- and the program was DEVOID of any humor, even wisecracks.

Lassie the collie was never nominated for an Academy Award. But the 1943 drama "Lassie Come Home," first in a series of popular M-G-M movies, was nominated for Leonard Smith's color cinematography.
