Assuming you're referring to the 2012 movie "The Impossible," the answer is purposely left ambiguous, but the filmmakers imply that Kathy and Gina passed away in the tsunami. Karl does not find them, and they don't appear in the film. I could not find evidence that the Schweber family were directly based on real people -- they seem to have been created for the film.

They actually are real people, not “characters” it’s takes a quick google search to figure this out and Maria said herself in an article that they still keep in touch with him but it is hard because he lost his two babies
