She realizes through her son that releasing the soul of the little girl was the worst thing that she could do, as she also realizes through watching the film of the little girl's interview in the insane asylum that she was pure evil and overall embraced that she was evil. This is why her mother murdered her, and her father treated her the way that he did. She was utterly evil for whatever reason, and nothing would ever change that.
Naomi Watts realizes that the reason why she did not die, but her boyfriend did, is due to the fact that she made a copy of the original and showed it to him, thereby breaking the "curse" of the tape. With this realization, she has helps her son make a copy of the tape, which they intend to show to someone to break his curse...and you as the viewer watch a really quick rendition of it before it goes to black...so you are now "cursed".
