BeauIn the original Nightmare on Elm Street, Freddy could only kill people when they were asleep (although, at the end of the film, the main character Nancy manages to bring Kruger out of the dreamworld and into the real world).
In the sequels, Freddy can kill people when they're awake. That was one of the reasons Wes Craven quit working on the first sequel (Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge). He did not like the idea of Freddy killing people in the waking world. Also, he did not like the idea of Freddy tricking the main character into committing the murders for him. And finally, he never wanted Nightmare on Elm Street to become a continuing franchise like the Halloween and Friday the 13thmovies.
