The best books for kids include ones that enhance education, and realationships with other children. A lot of these books include Sesame Street, and even Dr. Seuss is GREAT, as long as the child enjoys looking and interacting with the book. It's a win-win if they like it, and want you to read it every night.

Gregor the Overlander, The Gone trilogy, Hotel for Dogs, (definitely) The Guardians of Ga'Hool trilogy, (adapted versions of classics) Oliver Twist, Peter Pan, Around the World in 80 Days, The Prince and the Pauper, Treasure Island, To Kill a Mockingbird... etc., There are a lot of books for eleven year olds.
The age matters on the child's liking to books. Smaller age children like books with lots of pictures and words they understand. Older age children like books with action and adventure like Harry Potter or Percy Jackson and The Olympians.
(I've read all the Harry Potter and Percy Jackson and The Olympians books, they were both great reads!)
Gender can also play a role in smaller age children's likings. Girls who are 4-5 like fairies and princesses and boys like trucks and cars.
