Robert Moorman, a criminal serving a 9 to life sentence, was allowed a compassionate 72 hour furlough / release from the AZ State Prison in 1984 to visit with his mother. They stayed at the Blue Mist, and while there he strangled and stabbed her to death, then hacked her body into pieces and disposed of her in various dumpsters around town. He has been a resident of nearby death row since 1985. The motel is supposedly named for the ' blue mist ' of the cyanide death chamber.
