Hope Savage is mentioned quite a bit in Deborah Baker's 2008 book, "A Blue Hand: The Beats in India." She is referred to as "that mysterious and beautiful girl whose path, before she disappeared, had crossed [Allen Ginsberg's] own in Greenwich Village." She is also identified as "a young woman from South Carolina" (p. 29), and is probably best known as one-time girlfriend of Beat poet Gregory Corso. She early on found herself in the early hipster hangout of Greenwich Village, NYC: "By 1955, Hope Savage tramped about in a long fringed shawl and worn saddle shoes among the Village bars and coffeehouses with a sense of freedom, secure in the knowledge that no one knew her real name ... " (p. 44).
The book continues: "On December 10 [1962?], the day before Allen and Peter left for Benares, Hope Savage received an expulsion notice from the Indian authorities. Accused of immorality, she had ten days to leave the country." (p. 186)
A letter from her brother to Gregory Corso some time later stated, "I guess you wonder will I speak of Hope, but I know nothing but that she in in the Orient and well ... and a few months ago she ran into Gary Snyder and Allen Ginsberg who would know more of her than I" (p. 207)
Taken by the romance and high spiritual vibes of Indian, Hope most likely disappeared into the back country to some ashram or guru's lair, probably taking on an Indian name to avoid capture by the meddlesome authorities, where she may well still be living for all we know ...
