it was one of the later episodes (season 8 episode 19 entitled "Two's a Crowd") where Mike and Archie are locked in the storage room at Archie's bar and they start drinking. There is a moment when they show Mike's face and I think he finally understands Archie better once Archie tells him the "Shoebootie" story. In all of the years of the show and of their fighting, it's the first time that Mike 'gets it' from Archie's point of view.

Edith died in her sleep due to a stroke on the second season premiere episode of the All in the Family spin-off Archie Bunker's Place titled Archie's Alone.
She died unexpectedly, from a stroke in her sleep. Archie tries to wake her up to make him breakfast but he can't wake her up. Although they don't actually show that part in the episode (the funeral is already over when the show begins), Archie talks about that moment during a grieving moment at the end of the show, as he holds one of her slippers and cries. Also, I believe this episode was already into the "Archie Bunker's Place" series, the spin-off to "All in the Family".
