A short story by Hamlin Garland that tells of a poor Midwest farmer and his wife. They go into town and Sam Markham forgets his wife while he is there. Delia Markham is left to roam the streets of the town with her baby. Mrs. Hall, the wife of a wealthy lawyer, takes pity on her and takes her into her home and entertains the baby and woman. At last, Sam Markham comes to get her and they go home. The theme of the story is of human sympathy.
